Support for Major Decisions
Another frequent inquiry is from organizations facing a major decision. They are not necessarily doing strategic planning or undertaking any significant strategy review, but they are facing a major issue or possible change.
Examples of these situations include:
- Opportunities to grow significantly
- Necessity to shrink significantly
- Opportunity for a partnership or merger
- Decisions about new or additional locations
- Founder transitions and succession planning
In these cases, either staff or Board members have engaged me to help them think through the best approach to the decision they are facing. In some cases, I refer them to others who may be better suited to advise on the specific issue (for example, an expert in nonprofit mergers). In other cases, it requires a "step back" to discuss the organization's impact and theory of change in order to assess the options and make a decision that will have the greatest positive impact.
A hallmark of my practice is that I help organizations focus on the decision at hand while also accounting for the current capacity of the organization. Hopefully, in the process, I help them build greater capacity.
